Broke Fordwich
The Hidden Side of the Hunter Valley
Tucked beneath the Brokenback Range, Broke Fordwich is a landscape of vineyards, open skies and a quieter pace. While many visitors know the Hunter Valley, fewer discover this part of it — a place shaped by wine, agriculture and a strong connection to the land.
Cael's Gate Wines acknowledges the Wonnarua People, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, work and grow our vines in Broke Fordwich. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise their continuing connection to Country, culture and community.

A Region Shaped by Place
Set against the Brokenback Range, Broke Fordwich has its own distinct character within the Hunter Valley. Its position further inland and partial shelter from coastal influences contribute to a warm growing environment, while varied soils, slopes and waterways create differences from vineyard to vineyard.
It is a landscape that rewards understanding of individual sites — something that continues to shape the way we grow, source and make wine at Cael’s Gate.
A Community of Independent Winemakers
Unlike larger wine destinations, Broke Fordwich remains a region of boutique producers, family-owned vineyards and independent cellar doors. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, meet the winemakers, and experience a side of the Hunter Valley that feels more personal and less commercial.
It is a region built on craftsmanship, hospitality and a genuine connection between grower, winemaker and guest.
Why We Chose Broke Fordwich
Chris and Reyna first fell in love with the Hunter Valley when they were married here in 2007. Years later, they discovered the property that would become Cael's Gate Cellar Door— a unique timber-slab home nestled amongst bushland with sweeping views of vineyards and the Brokenback Range. Today, Broke Fordwich is not simply where Cael's Gate is based. It is home.
Our estate Tempranillo vineyard, Samuel Vineyard, is planted here, and every visitor experience is shaped by the landscape, people and character of this remarkable region.
Beyond the Wine
Broke Fordwich offers more than cellar doors. Discover walking trails through nearby national parks, local producers, artisan food experiences, olive groves, galleries and some of the Hunter Valley's most spectacular scenery.
Whether you are visiting for a tasting, a weekend escape or simply to explore somewhere new, Broke Fordwich rewards those willing to venture beyond the familiar.
Experience Broke Fordwich at Cael's Gate
Set beneath the Brokenback Range, Cael’s Gate offers a relaxed and personal way to discover the region we call home. Taste our estate-grown Broke Fordwich wines alongside wines from distinctive vineyards across New South Wales, explore Samuel Vineyard and settle in for an unhurried afternoon behind the gate.
Broke Fordwich is our home, but our approach to wine extends beyond regional boundaries. We seek vineyards where variety and site come together with purpose — whether that site is here in Broke Fordwich or elsewhere in New South Wales.
